Temperature Play

What is temperature play?

Temperature play is a technique used to stimulate the skin and erogenous zones, creating a sexual reaction. It is used quite often in BDSM practises, but can also be incorporated into vanilla play.

Differences between hot and cold sensations can help heighten the senses and arouse the skin's neuroreceptors. Switching between hot and cold sensations in unpredictable patterns brings a sense of surprise to the receiver, provoking an exciting secual response. This sensation can be heightened through the use of a blindfold.

Warm Sensation

Remember to stay safe during warm play - don't overheat toys or food as they can cause burns!

Ideas for external play:
  • body candles (have different melting points to hosuehold candles)
  • melted chocolate
  • warming lube
  • sauces/syrups
  • massage oils

Cold Sensation
Use cold items to help create shivers and tingles!

Ideas for external play:
  • ice cubes - don't use them straight out of the freezer! Let them melt a bit, so they don't stick to the body
  • cool shower
  • cooling/tingling lube
  • ice cream - don't play too close to the vulva, it could cause a yeast infection!
  • tingle gel

Fire and Ice Oral Play
Fire and ice is a term for an oral technique, practised through providing hot and cold sensations to a person receiving oral sex.

The person performing oral sex warms or cools the mouth to change the sensation the receiver feels. For example, having a bowl of ice cubes to suck on can cool the mouth quickly to create a cold sensation for receiver. For the warm sensation, having a hot drink such as tea can help quickly warm the mouth. Side tip: mint tea could be something to try due to the tingling sensation it provides!

Temperature Play with Toys
The addition of toys can make ice play really exciting. Metal, glass, crystal and other non-porous toys adapt quickly to changes in heat and are a good way to explore temperature play inside the body.

The bowls of warm (NOT BOILING) or cold water to change their temperature. Place your toy in the bowl of choice for around 2 minutes and once satisfied with the temperature, begin play!

Use lube for easy insertion and be careful with the temperature of the water. Do not use boiling water to heat toys - it could cause burns.

Tips for Safe Play
  • when engaging in cold play, be mindful of tingling, burning or discomfort to the skin - although uncommon, it could be signs of frostbite
  • aftercare aftercare aftercare! Ask your sexual partner how they felt, how they are feeling now, what they liked, what they would prefer not to do again
  • during heat play, remember not to overheat toys/food/liquids as it could cause burns!
  • after cold play, warm up afterwards. Blankets and heaters are always good.
  • cold dulls reaction to pain - if something is hurting, it might be more difficult to identify. Be mindful of this and communicate constantly!
