Menstrual Hygiene
This post is in honour of World Menstrual Hygiene Day! (28 May)
The day aims to raise awareness on menstrual health and change negative social norms that surround menstruation. It's vision is to empower womxn to manage their periods without shame or limitations.
Break the silence and support the cause for positive menstrual health management (MHM).
Good Practises
There are so many different methods of handling your period. Pads and tampons are popular ways of managing the flow, however menstrual cups and period-proof underwear are also great options!
Of course, every womxn has their own strategies for managing their period, however some good practises might include some of the following! The most important thing, no matter what method of MHM suits you, is to be clean and safe. Especially with using tampons, it is important to be clean to avoid a build up of bacterial toxins that could cause problems such as toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
Talk
Talking about periods is so important! We need to break the cultural taboos surrounding menstruation. It is the most healthy, natural, biological process that should not be shamed.
Womxn should not feel embarrassed to talk about menstrual hygiene; it affects us all. In some developing countries, womxn are told their periods should be a secret are that they are dirty. They are also told to keep away from food, holy buildings and communities because they are considered unclean.
Make this year your year to help break these negative social and cultural norms! Help to raise awareness by even just talking about menstruation and breaking these taboos.

- do not reuse tampons or pads (unless the pad is cloth and can be washed and reused)
- do not use a tampon for more than 8 hours at a time
- research safer, greener choices to manage your period and to avoid harmful toxins in mass-made sanitary products
- be sure to rinse and clean menstrual cups according to their instructions before using them again
- don't fall into the trap of using douching or 'feminine intimate hygiene' products. Your vagina is self cleaning and doesn't need to be rinsed with unnecessary products!
- avoid harsh perfumed sanitary products
